The M.F.A. degree program of study in Design

is determined to develop visual artists in the specialized areas of scenic, lighting and costume design.
This is a three-year, 54 credit-hour program structured to develop both the individual artistic aesthetic and the practical skills necessary for a career in design for the performing arts. Practical experience in the traditional stage crafts is placed within historic and current experimental contexts.
Selected M.F.A. design candidates are expected to participate in the department's six annual mainstage productions encompassing theatre and dance performance as primary designers in the areas of expertise.
In addition the Shakespeare Theater's Academy of Classical Acting Workshop productions provide design opportunities while enrolled in the M.F.A Design Program. The degree program culminates in a thesis project, which includes the design of a mainstage production chosen in consultation with the faculty; and a written thesis supporting the research and creative processes used to develop and actualize this design.
Our faculty in the Theatre and Dance department have deep roots in the dynamic professional performing arts community in the Washington, DC area. They maintain very active professional careers and can often arrange internships and outside design opportunities for qualified M.F.A. candidates. Particular strengths of our program include personal attention and mentoring; flexible curriculum focusing on individual needs; internship possibilities; and ample opportunity to design during all stages of the candidate's development.
