Financial Aid
The department of Theatre and Dance offers two opportunites for financial aid:
the Presidential Arts Scholarship
and
Federal Work Study
Presidential Arts Scholarship
Ten tuition remission competitive Presidential Arts Scholarships are available
through the Department of Theatre and Dance at the George Washington University
for entering Freshmen students of exceptional talent, maturity and committment.
The scholarships are awarded in the areas of dance (4), acting (4) and design/technical
production (2) based upon information on the application, support materials
and the audition/interview process held on the university campus. Subject to
annual review, the awards are awarded for four years.
APPLICANT:
The
recipient must be an undergraduate student admitted to the entering freshmen
class. Recipients must be exceptionally talented, highly trained
and widely experienced with intentions of pursing further training and experience
while at the university in either dance, theatre or theatrical design to be
considered for one of these highly competitive scholarships.
REQUIREMENTS:
Recipients pursue a minor in their area of expertise within the department and
are required to register each semester for a minimum of three credit hours of
course work in the area for which the scholarship is awarded. Recipients participate
each semester in dance, acting or design technical production activities sponsored
or sanctioned by the department. Performance recipients are required to audition
each semester for all productions sanctioned by the department. In the event
the recipient is not cast in a production for the semester, alternative responsibilities
are assigned. Those recipients who are not cast must contact Carl Gudenius,
the department's Technical Director, immediately following the posting of the
audition result for these assignments.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

* Actors/actresses
must perform two contrasting monologues of their own choosing, total not to
exceed three minutes, from contemporary plays.
* Dancers must participate in
a technique class and must perform a solo of their own choosing, not to exceed
three minutes.
* Designers/technicians must bring a portfolio or other support
materials reflecting skills in design and technical production to be presented
at the interview.

Guidelines for Technical/Design Presidential Arts Scholars
The Presidential
Arts Scholarship in production design/tech is open to anyone who has had an
active involvement in theater production and/or design and has an interest in
continuing these activities at the university level. Design or crew work in
the areas of scenery, costume, lighting, sound or stage management are relevant.
Students interested in applying for this scholarship are interviewed by the
design faculty during the Performing Arts Scholarship auditions. They should
be prepared to discuss their activities and provide any supporting documentation
that illustrates their work. Sample documentation may include but is not limited
to:
Artwork (samples of non-theatrical artwork are also encouraged)
Design plans
(drafting, sketches, light plots)
Renderings of design work
Photographs of actual
work
Sample audio work
Stage manger prompt script
Letter of recommendation
Reviews
Any additional production paperwork
Selection is based on interest and
enthusiasm as well as skill and knowledge.
NOTE: Applicants are welcome
to audition/interview for as many as they feel qualified. Actors and dancers
who have also developed skills in technical production may audition for both,
or all three. However, a candidate may receive only one award. Multiple auditions
may require applicant to be present for both days.

Federal Work Study
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally-funded work program for students to earn wages during college while working for nonprofits, educational institutions, government and community service employers.
At GW, the FWS program is administered by the Student Employment staff of the Career Center and the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA). Students must meet eligibility requirements, and apply and accept their financial aid package - including the FWS Award - each year through the OSFA.
GW FWS students can apply and interview for the following positions in the Department of Theatre and Dance:
- Costume Shop Assistant
Duties include, but are not limited to, costume construction and alteration, as well as maintenance of the Theatre & Dance costume stock. Knowledge of basic sewing skills is preferred, but on-the-job training will be provided.
- Main Office Assistant
General office work. Duties include, but are not limited to: updating files, copying, faxing, typing, answering phones, responding to emails, etc. Students will need to learn basic information about the academic program and related productions in order to answer questions from prospective students, etc. The candidate should have good communication skills, be computer literate, organized, punctual, and friendly!
- Promotions Office Assistant
Duties include, but are not limited to postering and publicizing Mainstage shows, returning phone calls and emails, and working in the box-office during Mainstage productions. The candidate should have good communication skills, the ability to work unsupervised, and be computer literate. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is a plus, but not required. The student must be available to work evenings of Mainstage performances.
- Scene Shop Assistant
Duties include, but are not limited to, scenic construction, painting, props
construction, and installation and setup of scenery. Some experience with
carpentry and set construction preferred. The work is physical in nature,
and the applicant must be willing to get dirty.
These positions are available in the Fall, and last through the academic year. FWS students are considered student temporary employees and are required to present appropriate identification and paperwork prior to commencing employment. Once hired, students receive an hourly wage and biweekly paychecks.
